WATERFORD: A CASE STUDY

A comprehensive rebranding of Waterford, New York that included a logo and wordmark, town website for visitors and prospective residents, town brochure, series of event posters, illustrative town map and other promotional materials. The town of Waterford has seen a 9.6% decrease in population from 2000 to 2010 (www.city-data.com). Of that number, over 52% were residents born in the millenial generation. Through this year-long process, I sought to close the threatening age gap,

to shed light on this quaint, upstate town and to prove Waterford as a valuable place to live and visit. Though small, the town has charm and many, engaging activities to offer incoming visitors and potential residents. It is the reimagining of Waterford’s antiquated identity with compelling, communicative material that will place the town once again on the tourist’s map and establish a lasting and positive mental image of Waterford.

“Shortly after moving to Waterford, New York, I saw incredible worth and beauty in this small, historic town. I remember one day, sitting in a small Waterford cafe, I suddenly felt very aware of my surroundings. I felt out of place. I did not see one person my age. At the booth in front of me was a group of elderly gentleman recounting the “good ol’ days.” At a table across the room, there were two grey-haired women sipping tea. In another cafe down the street, the customers were similar. I saw the growing generational gap manifested in that Waterford cafe.”
